Luka To The Lakers - The Biggest, Most Shocking Trade In NBA History
I can't believe this is real
Wow. Luka Doncic was just traded to my Lakers. This is crazy because we got an absolute steal. Only one first and AD and Max Christie? Usual trades like this (well, there aren’t trades like this) would require 6-7 firsts. The Lakers only giving one? Unheard of, Nico Harrison (Dallas GM) knows something we don’t about Doncic.
Trade details:
Mavericks: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, 2029 first rounder
Lakers: Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris
Jazz: Jalen Hood-Schifino, 2025 second rounder (via LAC,) 2025 second rounder (via DAL)
In this post, we’ll be talking about how this benefits each team, the future of the Lakers, and what’s at stake for the Mavericks.
The Benefits For Each Team
Los Angeles Lakers
After completing the biggest NBA, maybe sports trade in history, the Los Angeles Lakers have just let everybody know who’s their guy for the future. Luka is the best young guy in basketball, reminder: he’s still only 25, and is a great fit next to anybody Los Angeles chooses to pair him next to in post-Bron era.
I watched him play against LeBron in Los Angeles just over two years ago, and he went off for a 35 point triple double in a double overtime win for the Mavs.
The other thing that is scary about the Lakers’ future is how they can make another big move this trade deadline on February 6th. With time running out to get LeBron his last championship ring, LA is pressured to make another deal.
So, expect possibly one for a Chris Paul - heck anyone, because if LA is serious, they’ll go and get anybody.
Luka was who we thought to be “the most untouchable player in the NBA", clearly, no one is untouchable now.
So my advice to every NBA player is to sell your house, move out of the city, and be prepared to get traded. This is something you dream of (literally,) this simply unreal.
What is bad about the trade for the Lakers is that they lost their center. Sure they won last night without Anthony Davis in New York, but we saw five days ago against the Charlotte Hornets, he played like a present day Wilt Chamberlain. With wild, crazy stats like 42 points, 23 rebounds, he was THE guy. He was THEIR center who did everything. And now? He’s gonna be dangerous next to Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson.
Be scared if you aren’t a Lakers fan. Lakers coach, JJ Redick, will now be coaching his former teammate. LeBron just got his favorite NBA player. This is not real.
The title “superteam” is not defined as multiple stars on one team, it’s having both a, young star for the future, and your old current star playing together, the young star just happens to be the third best player in basketball and the old one happens to be the second greatest basketball player to ever touch one.
A trade like this has never quite happened in sports, this is one you imagine, day dream, night dream about. So for it to happen? You question why and if this is real.
And they got their guy.
Dallas Mavericks
To every Mavericks fan out their, I’m sorry. The Mavericks made a complete mistake. You could have gotten 7-8 first rounders for this man, but no, just because he’s a little out of shape (even then, he averages 34 points per contest) you trade him for only one first rounder? ONE?!
Mikal Bridges was traded for four first rounders back in the summer to the New York Knicks, James Harden was traded for 8 a few years ago, every “superstar” in the NBA when and if traded is dealt for at least 5 now a days, and with the excuse of “Anthony Davis and Max Christie is worth 4” Well, guess what? Luka is worth double.
The Mavericks didn’t need another center, they had all the pieces they needed to win a title, so if they don’t in the next 3-4 years, Kyrie is gone, AD is then too old, and your organization looks like fools. No one would have done that trade other than their GM, I repeat, nobody, so for it too happen, you need to fire him immediately.
LA’s Future
Max Christie was supposed to be a big part of the Lakers’ future if he continued this progression, however he was included in the trade and is headed to Dallas so all the Lakers really have is their future draft picks (not much) and Luka. No center, Los Angeles will likely be in talks for Washington center, Jonas Valanciunas, or a similar center. He would be great for them for the next couple of years and would be a great help after losing Davis.
Another option would be Portland’s centers, Robert Williams or possibly Deandre Ayton, however, I think Los Angeles has been eyeing Valanciunas for months now as they tried to sign him in free agency during the offseason.
Dallas’s Future
They shouldn’t be so focused on their future, their title window is NOW. There is no excuse for trading your best player and not winning the championship, means a lot. They have three seasons to win a championship as Irving will be retired or not playing his best. By then, AD won’t be in his prime. Klay won’t be either. This was a stupid decision by the Mavs, and sure they have some draft picks, however they only have one good current player that they can use for their future, Dereck Lively. Dallas needs to focus on the present.
Starting Lineups For Both Teams
Lastly, let’s look at the projected starting lineups for both teams:
Los Angeles Lakers
PG: Luka Doncic
SG: Austin Reaves
SF: LeBron James
PF: Rui Hachimura/Jared Vanderbilt/ Dorian Finney-Smith
C: Jaxson Hayes/Dorian Finney-Smith/Christian Wood
Dallas Mavericks
PG: Kyrie Irving
SG: Klay Thompson/Max Christie
SF: Quentin Grimes/Klay Thompson
PF: Anthony Davis/Daniel Gafford/P.J. Washington
C: Anthony Davis/P.J. Washington/Daniel Gafford/ Dereck Lively
Which team has the better lineup?
All I’m going to say is that the last time Markieff Morris was traded to the Lakers, they won the championship.
23+77=100.
Mark Cuban would have never made this trade. Great analysis Jack!
Truly shocking!
